Turkana Bowl 56Our collection of vintage Turkana bowls are one of our favourites. This bowl is part of an extremely special collection which took 8 years to curate. Each bowl has been hand carved from indigenous wood by women of the Turkana community in Kenya. Turkana bowls are known for their distinctive and unique shapes as well as their beautiful carving details, showcasing the artisanal wood working skills of the Turkana people. Each stool had its own unique design
The distinctive design of the tripod legs and bowl-shaped seats are typical to Guarage style
It has distinct central triangular patterns and bears the authentic wear of regular use which is seen in their warm patina and shine
Made from metal this shield would have traditionally been used for disputes between the warring Turkana and Karamajong people until 1962 when Uganda gained independence
with a distinctive and rare solid wood handle
They are renowned for their exceptional wood carving skills
This vessel would have been used to store milk
Their specialness is also reflected in the repair work which makes each bowl so unique
These striking stools are hand carved from a single piece of hardwood by the Tonga people who are an ethic Bantu group from Southern Zambia and the neighbouring Northern Zimbabwe
