Construction workers enjoy a pint, Manchester, 1968
Description
Construction workers enjoy a pint, Manchester, 1968Workers celebrate with a well earned pint after laying the final beam during the construction of the new St Marys hospital in Manchester. The image recalls the iconic Lunch Atop a Skyscraper; the elevation is more modest here, but the mood is similar, the men appearing relaxed at an exposed height that many of us would be fearful of. Tom Stuttard was one of the Guardians first staff photographers, and worked for the paper for 46 years (1925 1971).
He didn’t just follow the press into the village
The snow-shrouded trees by the receding wall frame the subject walking down the steps perfectly
The engine was retired from regular service in 1963 and is now part of the National Railway Museum collection
the sound waves distorted the photo-finish image
